Ice Block above Bottleneck that can tumble down anytime.
On the bottleneck, climbers have to traverse 100 metres exposing themselves to risk. The steepness reaches 60 degrees at some points. And the fact that you are in the death zone, above 8200 metres, on such steep trail, with the help of a thin rope to hold on.
A 300 foot high seracs of the east of the summit hangs over Bottleneck – that can come tumbling down anytime. Any moment, Any climber can fall the victim. And the safest way? Move as fast as you can on that altitude; that steep section; exposing yourselves to the strong and chilling wind.
At such altitude, your body struggles to function normally. And there, at the bottleneck, lies the steepest and the hardest section on K2 climbing route.
You do not want to mess up with the king of mountains – K2.
Climbers must traverse a steep, exposed passage beneath unstable overhanging seracs, just 400 metres below the summit. The bottleneck has witnessed many deaths.
One of the worst climbing disasters on K2 occured in 2008 at the Botleneck. A big Chunk of ice shelf sheared off and killed a climber instantly and swept away the rope network. The Climbing members who were descending had no rope support and it was already dark. The series of events occurred while climbers tried descending without the help of ropes and the total of 11 climbers died that day.
Bottleneck commands extra attention of climbers.
So, you may ask why climbers use the bottleneck instead of all those dangers and such a terrifying record? The route to K2 trough bottleneck is still the easiest and the fastest route to the tp of the K2 and to back. By traversing the Bottleneck, climbers can cut back the significant amount of their time that they would have to spend on the risky deah zone otherwise.
All the major routes – Abruzzi Spur SE route, Cesen route through SSE Ridge, and the American variety on the NE ridge pass through the Bottleneck. Bottleneck lies just 400 metres below the top of the k2 and there are not more options to reach the top other than the Bottleneck.
The hundreds of feet high overhanging glacier is certainly not the possible route to the top. There is a possible way to the top by rock-climbing the cliffs that lie on the left of Bottleneck. But, this climb is technically too difficult; only once mountaineers have used this route. That was nearly 80 years ago.
Fall in love with the mountain.
K2 itself is one of the deadliest mountains in the world. To all those who want to conquer k2, the second highest mountain in the world, the bottleneck stands as a big challenge, not just while ascending, but while descending as well. So, make sure you respect the nature, the mountain and this very part of K2. For K2 decides what to do with you while you are there on it.
