Born on May 9, 1985, Temba Tsheri Sherpa is a famous Nepalese climber, businessman, and
a leader in mountain tourism. He became known worldwide on May 23, 2001, when he
reached the summit of Mount Everest at the age of 16. At that time, he was the youngest
person in the world to reach the top-a record confirmed by Guinness World Records.

reached the summit of Mount Everest at the age of 16. At that time, he was the youngest
person in the world to reach the top-a record confirmed by Guinness World Records.
Although Jordan Romero later broke this world record in 2010 at age 13, Temba remains the
youngest Nepalese climber to ever stand on the world’s highest peak. This title is now almost
permanent because Nepal’s government no longer gives climbing permits to anyone under
16. Beyond his early records, he has spent his career in the trekking and guiding industry,
using his strength and deep knowledge to help shape the future of mountain climbing in
Nepal.
Growing up in the remote village of Tashi Nam in the Dolakha region, Temba knew the high
Himalayas not just as beautiful peaks, but as the center of daily life. Born into a close-knit
Sherpa family, he was raised by his father, Chhauwa Sherpa, who worked as a cook on
trekking trips, and his mother, Lakpa Diki Sherpa, who worked hard on the family farm and
at home.
Along with his two brothers, young Temba balanced the chores of childhood, such
as herding cattle and walking an hour to school each morning. These simple routines, mixed
with hard work and big dreams, gave him the inner strength and a deep bond with the
mountains that would later lead him to greatness.

mountains that would later lead him to greatness.
In 1998, at just 13 years old, Temba left his village for Kathmandu to start fifth grade at
Pashupati Mitra Secondary School. Drawn to the mountains he loved, he began formal
training at age 13, becoming the youngest person to finish the basic climbing course at the
Nepal Mountaineering Association. He was also a great student, earning a full scholarship to
the well-known Siddhartha Vanasthali School. Later, another scholarship allowed him to
study at Wuhan University in China, where he earned a degree in Business Administration,
successfully combining his mountain roots with professional skills.
Temba’s journey to the top of the world included both painful setbacks and great success. In
April 2000, he tried his first big climb up the southern side of Everest. After months of hard
training, he got incredibly close to the top(only 22 meters away)before terrible weather and
tiredness forced him to turn back. The way down was even harder, as severe frostbite
caused him to lose five of his fingers.

For most people, such a physical and emotional blow
would end their dream, but for the 15-year-old Sherpa, it only made him more determined.
Just one year later, Temba returned to the mountain and reached the summit on May 23,
2001, via the North Ridge in Tibet. This feat turned his past pain into a historic victory of
pure willpower.

After his historic climb, Temba became a global spokesperson for Himalayan climbing and
tourism. Speaking Nepali, Chinese, English, and Hindi, he traveled the world to connect
different cultures and represent Nepal’s climbers. These experiences, along with his
mountain wisdom, helped him build a successful career. More than just leading adventures,
Temba works hard to protect Sherpa traditions, helping every climber feel the deep cultural
and spiritual connection his people have with the mountains.
Throughout his career, Temba has received many high honors for his work. Guinness World
Records recognized him as the youngest Everest climber of his time, and in 2011, the
The government named him a Goodwill Ambassador for Nepal Tourism Year. He has also
received important national awards like the Ganesh Man Prativa Puraskar, the Sundere
Sherpa Rastriya Prativa Puraskar, and the TAAN Everest International Award.
Today, he
continues to lead the industry as the ED of Summit8000, following his previous work with
Dreamers Destination and the Sherpa Khangri Group. His story remains a powerful example
of courage and humility, inspiring people everywhere to chase their dreams.
